Gdkxft transparently adds anti-aliased font support to gtk+-1.2. Once you have installed it, you can run any (well, nearly any) existing gtk+ binary and see anti-aliased fonts in the gtk widgets. You don't need to recompile gtk+ or your applications.

You will need gtk+ at least version 1.2.0, and libXft, which is packaged with XFree86 version 4.0 and higher. (I recommend that you upgrade to at least XFree86 4.1, though).

Important Disclaimer: A botched install of gdkxft has the potential to make your X configuration unworkable. For this reason, please read the README through to at least the end of the Quickstart section before you try installing, even if you are installing from an rpm package.
